Phex was beginning to think one of the recurring patterns of his life would be waking up in the medical bay on some alien world, sticky with bandage spray and good intentions.

He looked around.

This time, it seemed to be a proper large hospital. It was rock-walled and huge but well lit and clean, with that certain smell all medical facilities always have, no matter the place or species – disease, injury, bile, bleach, and soap.

He wondered idly if his headache, queasy stomach, and dry mouth were from blood loss like last time, or if he had the more valid excuse of being hit on said head.

This time was a little different because there was the pretty face of a smiling Agatay medic in front of him. Phex decided that he definitely thought the Agatay were sexy as a species. He wondered what Kagee would say to that, if he told him. He wondered what Missit would say.

Missit.

Right, the dome. There had been a bomb. And then a collapse.

“Is Missit okay?” he croaked. He closed his eyes, even though the face above him was pretty, because this hospital seemed awfully bright. “My pantheon?”

“Aw, what a sweetie. He wakes up worried. Anesthesia does that to some patients.” The medic’s lyrical pronunciation of Galactic Common was almost as pretty as his face.

Kagee’s voice came then. “Everyone’s fine. You’re the putz who ignored two gaping wounds and half a dome on top of you.”

“Liar,” said Phex, because Kagee was obviously exaggerating.

“You forgot about the bang on the noggin.” That was Tyve’s mild voice from somewhere near Phex’s feet.

Phex was a bit pleased about that – at least he’d passed out legitimately this time.

“Missit is spitting mad,” said Berril from his other side, opposite Kagee.

“He is unharmed?”

“Are you stuck in some sort of loop? I told you, he’s fine and you’re the injured numbskull.” Kagee’s voice rose. “Has his memory been affected? Medic!”

“No. Calm down, proxy,” said the medic, calmly.

“It’s just Phex being Phex, Kagee,” added Tyve.

“Fandina? Jinyesun?” Phex called out for his sifters plaintively, because he hadn’t heard either of them speak yet. Not that the Dyesi were the biggest talkers in his pantheon, but still, had they been hurt?

“Quasilun took them and Missit back to the spaceship. Agatay isn’t equipped to handle Dyesi injuries.”

“They’re injured!”

“Not visibly and they said they were fine, but the imago was in a panic that they might be internally bleeding or skin damaged. So, the acolytes decided they needed a full checkup.”

“Missit too?”

Kagee growled, “He’s fine, Phex. Gods!”

Tyve explained. “He was angrier than I’ve ever seen him because he wasn’t allowed to come with us and keep an eye on you. Tried to throw godhood around. Quasilun had to carry him under one arm like a big golden spitting-mad spud. There was kicking involved. Bob came with us, though. Say hi, Bob.”

“Hi,” came the cyborg’s slightly tinny voice.

“You’re sure he wasn’t hit? When I fell to the side I couldn’t protect—”

Tyve said soothingly, “Be reasonable, Phex. You think
